Grandview Apartments

Keansburg, NJ | 2021

Info

The architectural design of ‘Grandview Apartments’ is influenced by its proximity to the Raritan Bay. The expansiveness of the Raritan Bay extends itself into the site, and by doing so carves out a metaphorical open space between the buildings. This open space creates a visual connection back out to the bay and provides a nice amenity space for all the residents. At the ground level, the base of each building is softened with a ‘dune like’ landscape that slopes up from the streetscape and is dotted with tall grasses and other native south Jersey plants.

In order to create views to the bay, from the building interior, the façade is angled out in a “sawtooth” effect towards Raritan Bay. The material palette of buildings is composed using materials that are complementary to the waterfront context of this site. The use of faux wood siding creates a connection back to driftwood, weeds and native plants of the dune landscape and helps to soften the angular geometry of the facades. The faux wood siding is paired with light toned split face masonry, which also helps the buildings relate back to the sandy landscape adjacent to this site with its sandy and irregular finish.
